Exhibition of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2017 in Shanghai

"In Context. From Mies van der Rohe to EU Mies Award. From Barcelona Pavilion to Deflat Kleiburg", in the frame of the second edition of SUSAS (Shanghai Urban Space Art Season 2017), the most important event of urban design, architecture and public art host by the Municipality of Shanghai.

This exhibition shows the ephemeral reconstruction of the eight columns preceding the Barcelona Pavilion and the Winner of the EU Mies Award 2017 together with the four finalists and the Emerging Architect Winner. "In Context: from Mies van der Rohe to EU Mies Award, from Barcelona Pavilion to Deflat Kleiburg", introduces these projects within the historical framework of the construction of the German Pavilion; the original urban context that Mies dealt with in 1929; and the establishment of the EU Mies Award. The authors of the displayed projects worked with the urban context and revisited the historical context in order to erect the 8 columns made with waste drums, in Barcelona, and to revive the concrete colossus in Amsterdam. They both champion the idea of how European architecture cannot be thought, constructed nor understood, disconnected from its place.

On May 26 2017, Deflat Kleiburg, a renovation of one of the biggest apartment buildings in the Netherlands, was announced as the EU Mies Award 2017 Winner.
