museum for children: indoor: approximately1600m2 6000m3 including exhibition spaces, auditorium, workshop, office space, outdoor, waterbasins, fire place, garden for children to plant and grow vegetables, spices, etc…

the main design issues have been coordinated to specialize in exhibitions for children.
for example: the soft sitting steps sloping down towards the front door provide an area for the children to exercise as well as release their energy. likewise, the south-facing angled slab which cantelevers away fom the exhibition is “furnished” with matresses; visibly connected to the surrounding park. it provides a place to lie down and take a rest from the exhibition while observing the park beneath.
all elements of the building give consideration to the perspective of children. “ windows” which become slots in the roof or the wall, light shining in and striking walls to create different ambiences during the day, give different views of a house or what a house could be. technical equipment, such as airconditioning pipes and machines, elevator, construction…all run visibly through the building like veins and become part of the exhibition.

materiality became a design issue not only for constructing materials – but also in furthering the sensory experience for the children. this play of water and earth prompted the architects to insist on the water basin being along the south front. the water runs down a little waterfall and then to the basin on the west front. planting and growing as a distinct experience for the children has been the main reason to connect the building to its sourroundings by sloping the garden to the lower level.

concept of the building:
the building molds into the park: natural and artificial landscape intertwine within and through the building.
concrete slabs on three levels are connected to one another through ramps and the surrounding parks.
sheds in the roof and natural light from all sides create different views and a vivid 3d space.
sliding partition walls and specially designed furniture increase it´s variability..

as in any of their designs, honesty and clearness of construction and materiality are the architect´s main objectives.
experiments with new materials and their cohesiveness in detail are carefully considered to stress the main design ideas.
