Shopping Centre Cloche d’Or

Cloche d’Or is a mixed-use building situated close to the city center of Luxembourg and dedicated to commerce, housing, medical center and a wellness area. Cloche d’Or is the result of an international architects’ competition in 2014, won by Fabeck Architectes and executed together with Schemel Wirtz Architectes Associés and finished in 2020.

The project combines a parking lot of 2850 places, a shopping mall of 75,000 m2, a hypermarket of 10,000 m2, a residential complex of 25,000 m2, a wellness area with swimming pool as well as a medical center.
The site is located in the heart of the new Cloche d'Or district, making it part of Luxembourg City.
The commercial area is spread throughout 3 levels creating a pedestal on which the residential towers sit. Together with the neighbouring ‘’The Deloitte’’ building, they create an entrance portico on the ‘’Kockelscheuer Boulevard’’.
A welcoming Plaza and an iconic illuminated glass façade, that creates an urban chandelier, invite the visitors into the building. The interior stands in contrast with the sharp lines of the exterior design.

The concept consists in the creation of a contemporary ensemble, offering a strong and rigorous exterior. The interior is bathed in natural light, offering generous perspectives and an ideal platform for different uses of the space. It was during the architectural competition that the architects defined the DNA that would characterize project. Our strategy, during the planning and construction process, consisted in developing a very close relationship with our client and a complete Bim model of the project, which was a very helpful instrument.
With the given urban restriction of heights and alignments, the challenge was to create an attraction point with a lively environment. In the interior, the curved alleys provide perfect visibility for the retail outlets. Organically shaped skylights and openings can be found throughout the mall, bringing natural light throughout all levels. Different perspectives from one floor to another favour easy orientation and offer a pleasant way to experience Cloche d’Or. Not only do these openings serve for lighting purpose but they also allow a connection between the interior and the exterior surrounding context.

Cloche d’Or has been designed with a clear idea about materials and colours; gold, black and white. This colour palette provides a bright, contrasting, luxurious, warm, timeless and elegant frame. The structure mainly contains 110 tonnes of steel and prefabricated concrete elements. Different coloured and sized aluminium elements, make up the vibrant façade. Three of the skylights are formed from a gridshell glass structure. The remaining two elongated skylights, are designed to have a central arched glass structure evolving into a gridshell structure on the sides.
The project meets the highest standards in terms of quality, safety and is proud to have been awarded a “Bream Excellent” certification. The project was also certified "GOLD" by the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen". The hypermarket received a “SuperDrecksKëscht®” certification, with 90% of the waste completely recycled and 100% sorted. The vast green rooftop provides a buffer for water retention. The recommendations for maintenance have played an important role in the choice of each material, and planning process.
